According to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the BA.5 Omicron subvariant, which is currently the predominant coronavirus strain in the US, accounts for close to 80% of new Covid-19 infections in that country, while 12.8% of the infection were caused by the subvariant, BA.4. 77.9% of new infections during the week ending July 16 were caused due to BA.5 subvariant compared to 68.7% the week before.

More than 90% of new infections in the US are now caused by the two contagious subvariants. The CDC data revealed that the number of confirmed cases caused by the two subvariants has been rising since mid-May. Experts stated that the two subvariants of Omicron are more contagious and also seem to be resistant to vaccinations and past infections more readily than most of the previous variants.
